The city of Iași

Iași, a city on seven hills, like Rome, and a genuine "Cultural capital" of Romania, takes the impetus of its rich history in the contemporaneity of a vibrant social, academic and artistic life centre, in a permanent effervescence. A simple listing of unique historical moments anticipates the cultural dimension of the contemporary city: the first typography (1508); the first school taught in Romanian language (1640); the first medical society in Romania (1833); the first Botanical Garden in Romania (1856); the first national theatre in Romania (1896). In 2008, the city of Iași celebrated 600 years since its first documentary attestation.

From a geographical standpoint, the city is situated near Romania’s Eastern border, being the Eastern border of the European Union. The population of the city  is of 367 000 inhabitants. Iași is accessible by air, as well as by road. By air, Iași Airport has a large number of direct flights to and from: Bucharest, Bologna, London, Paris, Rome, Tel Aviv, Turin, Venice, Vienna, Madrid, Munich, Barcelona, Brussels, Cologne, Milan, Larnaca, Catania etc. By road, the city of Iași is connected to the capital city by European road E85, as well as to the rest of the country by European and national roads.
